PLACES TO RIDE - IDAHO

This pages is set up to inform you of different places to ride in Idaho, and to remind us of all our blessings. Our offroad adventures of riding in different areas all started in the mid 1980's on Honda & Yamaha 3-Wheelers and a Honda CR125. As we fell more in love with riding we saved up for our 1st quads, a pair of 1992 Yamaha Blasters - more suspension and balance, not to mention the shifting actually went the opposite way on the 3-Wheelers. We've been riding and racing quads since the early 90's, and although we have also ridden dirt bikes our focus is on those riding areas that allow quads. We've tried to give as much info as we could for each place that we've been to and we hope you'll find it beneficial when inquiring about a place to visit. Each page is still under construction as we transfer our info and photos, but hope to have them completed soon. Feel free to swing by and say 'hi' if you see us out at a track, on the trails, or at the dunes.
To quickly jump down to an area, press Ctrl+F on your keyboard and type in the city.

SOUTHWEST REGION -

RABBIT CREEK OHV RECREATION AREA - MURPHY / OWYHEE, ID

We loaded up our Wildcat XX and Honda TRX 450Rs and headed out to Murphy, Idaho to check out the Rabbit Creek Recreation Area on the Owyhee Front (open desert riding). Rabbit Creek is 40 miles from Boise, easy to find. From I-84 heading west out of Boise take Exit 36 (Franklin Blvd) in Nampa and head south on Highway 45, following the signs to Murphy and Highway 78. Rabbit Creek Trailhead will be on your right before you get to the town of Owyhee (Oh-Why-Hee). Once you enter the large parking area there's a youth/beginner riding area on the left (south end) of the staging/parking area. There are also a good size truck loading ramp area, 2 restrooms, and hundreds of miles of trails. All trails are for OHV vehicles 54" wide or less, very family friendly and for riders of all ability levels. Trail R100 leads to a good size hill climb if that's your thing, otherwise the trails go everywhere, interconnect, and lead to other trail areas. SxS / UTV trailhead is about 1 mile further down the road (south on highway 78), right as you crest over the hill you'll come down to the bridge and you'll want to take a right onto Old Highway 45 Rd (also known as Rabbit Creek), if you miss the sudden turn, don't worry, just go across the bridge and take a right, it's another access point to Old Highway 45 and you'll see that it hooks right up. We saw 4 SxS's head out of this staging area and drive down the road to the SxS main trailhead, just make sure you're street legal. Rabbit Creek trails hook into Hemmingway and Fossil Creek, which all lead to Silver City, Idaho. For more information please visit the Rabbit Creek BLM page.
We had a great time on our first visit in mid June, 6-14-2020, after thunderstorms all day Saturday, the trails were great on Sunday! Stay Young, Have Fun, PLAY!

HEMINGWAY BUTTE OHV PARK - MELBA / OWYHEE, ID

Today we headed down to Hemingway OHV Park in the Melba / Owyhee area, just north of Murphy, with our Wildcat XX to see what the riding was like. It didn't disappoint. Great riding, better memories. Hemingway is about 35 miles southwest of Boise, easy to find. From I-84 heading west out of Boise take Exit 36 (Franklin Blvd) in Nampa and head south on Highway 45, following the signs to Murphy and Highway 78. Once you cross over the Snake River watch for Reynolds Creek Rd, it will be your 2nd right. Once you turn onto Reynolds Creek you'll follow for a mile or two and the road will curve left past a dairy farm. The OHV entrance will be on your right, or you can continue on maybe half a mile for a second entrance, also on your right. Both parking areas pretty big, we were surprised. There is a truck loading area at the 1st entrance and restrooms in both parking areas. We parked in the 1st entrance and could see a great area for beginners as we entered, lots of trails to explore with great visibility for both rider and spectators.
All trails are for SxS / UTVs, quads, and dirt bikes, very family friendly, and for riders of all ability levels. Hemingway connects into Rabbit Creek (see above) and Fossil Creek, which all lead to Silver City, Idaho. For more information please visit the Hemingway
 BLM page.
We had a great time on our first visit, July 25, 2020 not very dusty at all, great weather, and good fun. Stay Young, Have Fun, PLAY!

SKYLINE MX PARK & EVENT CENTER - KUNA, ID

1st time out at Skyline MX Park in Kuna, ID. August 2019 - We finally had an opening in our summer schedule to make the 5 hour drive to check out Skyline. Despite the fact that temps would be closing in on triple digits, we were itchin' to ride a track. Skyline boast 7 different tracks: Main Motocross, Vet track, Jack track, Pee-Wee track, Oval track, SxS track, and a Big Bike Rut track. We met with the staff and they were really friendly and gave us the run-down on their 81 acre facility. We'll post ATV / UTV track updates at the bottom of this section as they are made.

The main MX track is bike only, unless close to 20 quads show up, then they would open a session for them/us. The Pee-Wee track looked really good for the young bike riders. Elevation changes, different types of corners, and various jumps to hit. We observed others on the Jack track, didn't see anybody on the Rut track or Oval. We were told quads could ride the SxS / UTV track which is the 1st track you see as you enter the facility, on the far west end.

We had the entire SxS area to ourselves. The SxS track is about 60% hard pack and 40% silt bed. It's very mild and a bit narrow for more than 1 SxS at a time, especially in the corners but with quads it's typical of what we've raced on before, good width. The SxS track starts on hard pack with a small fly-away jump, followed by a 90 degree left down a straight to another small fly away that lands into a deep silt bed followed by a 180 left turn back towards what might be the making of a 15 foot +/- table and then back on to more of a pea gravel dirt mix and a 180 degree right, with 2 small fly away jumps with the 2nd jump landing back into the silt bed giving you a true taste (literally and figuratively) of what racing Baja is like. From the silt bed you go a little ways and then hit a 90 left and down another straight away into a fun and tight 90 left towards another mini table and back out of the silt and up to a 90 degree right and down a short straight to another 90 right followed by a 180 left up a short straight and into a 90 left that brings you back down the main straight. The straight is long, the full length of the track on the east side and back to the small fly away jump before turn 1. We tried to get a lot of photo's but with all the dust we had to protect the camera. With three of us out there we had to watch and maintain safe speeds going into each silt bed area because you literally couldn't see past your front bumper and there was a gentle breeze that had the silt dust drift over the track making the other corners for the other riders pretty difficult at times. We kept our dune flags on our quads to help see each other thru the dust and we took turns on the track so we could try and get some clear photo's, and always making sure our youngest rider could see. We had fun riding out there as a family and only share to help you and your family plan your visit and what to expect. If it's your first time on a track, this is a very mild track and you'll probably enjoy mastering it, working on your corners.

As noon approached we saw several dirt bikes heading out, and had a couple hours of riding the SxS track under our belts (and a ton of dust too), we decided to make our way over to the Vet track to check it out. The Vet track is right next to the main and we could see some sprinkler pipes on the west and south end of the Vet track. The Vet track was groomed and dusty, but after riding the SxS track, we were conditioned for it and the dust wasn't nearly as bad. The Vet track was a BLAST! Our Raptor 250 daughter was ripping thru the elevations, kind of making me nervous in a couple corners, but she did amazing! The Vet track is full of elevation changes, a few off-camber corners, step ups, blind tables that you don't jump (or take to the right), but keep it low, sliding over the top as the track direction changes. There was one main jump, a nice 15-20 foot table that gave you good lift, followed by a double which we all slowed down for and took as a single and a roll as the track had a quick 180 left afterwards. There was only one silt area and that was the following 180 right-hander. We were parked so far away we didn't go back to get the camera for pix on the Vet track, but it sure was nice. We're almost certain that more quads would come out if they knew they could ride the Vet track. It was pretty sweet!

The Main MX track was groomed nice from what we could see and was watered. We didn't see water on any of the other tracks, but did notice a couple sprinkler pipes on the west side of the Vet track, sprinklers between the Vet and Main. Below are pix we took and a little info if you plan on heading out to Skyline.

Directions: I-84 on the east end of Boise, Exit 57 (outlet mall exit), go west on Gowen Road. Follow Gowen past Fly / WPS, down to the Armory and take a left at the red light onto Pleasant Valley Rd. Follow Pleasant Valley for 9  miles. You'll pass a dirt quarry, a few correction facilities, and active train tracks. Skyline track entrance isn't marked very well, but if you hit gravel / dirt road, you just past it. You'll see their water towers off to your left and the entrance has a small sign right at the power poles. Entry fees, at the time of our visit, was $25 adults, $20 for youth.

Our only suggestion would be that if quads are charged the same price as the bikes, then they should also get to ride a comparable track; one that is groomed, watered, and maintained. But if they let the quads ride the vet with the bikes, that would be awesome. We'd go out there a lot more.  Skyline says they are quad friendly, but if you come out, you 'might' get to ride the vet track, otherwise the area to ride is small and as you can see from our photo's, quite dusty.

Update: January 2021! We showed up with our quads and were allowed to ride the vet track with the bikes! The vet track has a great layout, it has everything we hope for in a vet track. They are also improving upon their UTV track. It wasn't quite finished, but we did check it out with our quads. Once they connect the last left-hand corner in, it's going to be great. It has mostly the same layout, but it's wider and has a long roller / whoop section.

PLEASANT VALLEY ROAD DESERT RIDING - KUNA, ID

Pleasant Valley open desert riding. December 22, 2019 - Tons of open desert trails literally right next to Skyline MX (above). Directions: I-84 on the east end of Boise, Exit 57 (outlet mall / hockey rink exit), west on Gowen Road. Follow Gowen past Fly, down to the Armory and take a left at the red light onto Pleasant Valley Rd. Follow Pleasant Valley for 9  miles. You'll pass a dirt quarry, a few correction facilities, and active train tracks. As soon as you hit the gravel / dirt road, it's wide open riding on the north (right hand) side. Have fun!!

LITTLE GEM CYCLE PARK - EMMETT, ID

Little Gem Cycle Park in Emmett, ID. If you are looking for hill climbs close to town, Little Gem Cycle Park is the place for you! Just 25 minutes NW of Boise in the town of Emmett (Gem county) there are tons of trails to explore, a few man-made mx tracks, and a great place for quads and bikes of all sizes and abilities. As far as the UTV's go, we ran ourselves out of terrain in a hurry (not big hill fans), but there were a number of families out having a good time. Access is incredibly easy. Follow Highway 16 north of Star and as you come down the hill into the town of Emmett, take the first right onto Sand Hollow Rd. Sand Hollow road is packed gravel, just follow it back for a mile at the most and the first staging area is on your right. There is another staging area about a 1/4 mile farther in that is right by one of the motocross tracks and was pretty full when we got there. There are no amenities, so bring your own shade, water, and other needs and have fun riding! (date of visit, 04-26-2020)

CLAY PEAK RECREATION AREA - PAYETTE, ID

We happened to be in the area, playing at the Weiser dunes, and thought we would swing by before they closed at sunset, to see if it was worth making a trip out. It most definitely is! The bike, quad, utv track is a blast!! The track is directional, wide, full of tables, whoops, tight corners, it's great! Keeps you busy as a driver and we can hardly wait to get our quads our here. We didn't have much time left in the day but we did clock a couple dozen laps before sunset. What an amazing time! We plan on checking out the rest of the area on our next visit.
Directions from Boise:
From I-84 take Highway 95 North exit (Fruitland, ID), and follow to Payette, approximately 9 miles.
Take a Right on Hwy 52 / 2nd Ave S. and follow east to Clay Peak Rec Area, approx 2.2 miles.
Information from the Clay Peak Recreation page -
Located off of Highway 52 in Payette, Idaho, this 200 acre motorcycle and ATV park is open year-round, from dawn until dusk. The 2 miles of trails utilizes the best of natural terrain with added doubles, multiple tabletops and challenging sweepers.
Address: 2560 Hwy 52, Payette, ID. 83661 and Phone: 208-642-6036

WEISER DUNES - WEISER, ID

February 6, 2021 -
We made the 2 hour drive from Boise to Weiser dunes today for some good fun. The dunes are small, but have a lot to offer for a day of riding. There's one big hill, several small jump areas, trails, and just an overall good place to bring the family for a day ride.
Located in the southwest region of Idaho right along the Columbia River. Across the river you can see I-84 as it goes through northeast Oregon.
Directions:
From I-84 take Hwy 95 exit, Fruitland, ID and follow North to Weiser, approx 20 miles.
Take the 1st left after you cross the bridge, onto Commercial St (the sign is small), going west.
Turn left onto Business Hwy 95, going South. Follow for 100 yards and as soon as you go under the train overpass, take a right onto Hwy 70. If you miss it, you will be in Oregon and need to turn around (like we did, lol).
At the stop sign, turn left (west), and follow for 4.5 miles and turn Right onto Eaton Road.
Take the 1st Left (about 1 mile) onto Olds Ferry Rd and head west.
Follow 8 miles to the dunes. The first 2 miles are paved, the remainder is hard-packed, but unimproved. We saw 3-cattle semi's picking up so the road is maintained, just not by the city and we have photos showing you what to expect.
Have fun!

SOUTHEAST REGION -

SAINT ANTHONY SAND DUNES - ST ANTHONY, ID

This place is amazing! There is a lot of riding available and several huge hills that will challenge any machine you bring. Thunder Mountain is on the East Side of the 35 mile long recreation area, near Egin lake. From the South side of Thunder Mountain, we had no problems with our stock (at the time) 400EX’s. The North side was another story… The paddles did their job, but we didn’t have enough power to climb the steep dune. The owners of Sand Hills Resort told us that the bigger dunes are 600-1000 feet in vertical climb. The distance wasn’t the problem, the challenge was how steep these things are! We also gave Choke Cherry hill a few good attempts, but we found ourselves laughing at one another since we couldn’t even make it half way up. And then there’s Devils Dune, after attempting the first 2 steep dunes we didn’t think it could get much worse… but they did. We couldn’t get up Devils Dune from the North side either but the South side was no problem. The view from the top was spectacular. For all of you hill shooters at Glamis, you've got to check this place out... it's humbling. There’s camping available on the East end of the Dunes at Sand Hills Resort. There’s grass, restrooms, and showers too.

Egin Lake Directions: Follow I-15 north to Idaho Falls and then exit onto Highway 20. Follow Highway 20 North to exit 346. At the highway off ramp, turn left (north) onto the hwy 20 business loop. Follow for approx ¼-½ mile and turn left onto 4th N / 600 N. You'll come up to a 'Y' in the road where the obvious traffic follows the curve left. You can either follow the curve left, which takes you south to 500 N. or you can go straight per the little green sign that you might miss, and follow it up to the stop sign. At the stop sign, take a left onto 1900 E. and follow it down to 500 N. At the stop sign at 1900 E & 500 N. you're going to want to either continue on 500 N (if you followed the curve earlier, or you'll turn right onto 500 N. if you came down 1900 E. You should be heading west on 500 N. and you'll come to another 'Y'. This time be sure to stay to the right (going straight across the railroad tracks) staying on 500 N. Follow 500 N. past a couple farms and take a right on 29 Crapo Lane, Egin Lake. There will be signs directing you to the Egin Lake Access (Dune access).

IDAHO FALLS RACEWAY / NOISE PARK - IDAHO FALLS, ID

A few miles west of Idaho Falls airport, Idaho Falls Raceway, formerly Noise Park, is/was a great place to ride. Quads haven't been allowed out there for a few years but we have heard from the city that the desert trails around the track will be opened to quads, bikes, & side-by-sides, and they hope to open the first weekend in June (2017). Below are photo's from our only time being allowed on the track. We're hopeful to get out there and check out the trails once they open.
Update!! September 2017. The ID Falls OHV Trails are having their ribbon cutting ceremony on 9/22/2017. We were out there a little early and did a few laps around the outer/yellow loop. It was a lot of fun and will definitely help build our endurance for GP and hare scramble racing. Their are several Orange loops throughout, however we stayed on the Yellow loop our 1st visit and it's probably close to 7 miles long. Next time will be mixing in the Orange with the Yellow to see how much faster we can get worn out.
We were blessed to be able to ride out here again on Thanksgiving day and it was so amazing. After our first lap our 12 year old daughter was shocked to hear that was only 1 lap and then commented, "I love all the natural beauty out here" as we could see snow covered mountains to the west with Sun Valley on the other side. A comment that caught both of us completely off guard. We stayed on the yellow loop most of the day and found out by trial and error that the orange markers shorten the loop quite a bit, but still a lot of fun. The best part was probably hearing our daughter ask if we could ride there more often. Absolutely. We're so glad she loves it too.
We'd really like to thank all the volunteers with the Idaho Falls Trail Machine Association for their long hours and hard work, both in the dirt and behind the scenes, to make these trails happen.

fall creek - SWAN VALLEY, ID

We had such a great time riding and camping here with amazing friends we met through our church a short time after moving to Idaho. Our daughter (Vikings fan) had so much fun swimming in the creek with her new friends that I don't even think she rode over the weekend, but the other kids did enjoy riding her quad around camp. The Fall Creek trails go ALL over the place up in the mountains, beautiful scenery, views, and soooo quiet, and extremely close to town, about 30-40 minutes from Idaho Falls. The trails are for 50" wide or less and there is a lot of single track for you bikes out there, you won't get bored. We all camped in primitive areas along Fall Creek Rd with our group and saw a number of other groups doing the same. Photos show all our kids having fun in the creek and pix from one of our rides (off of our old gopro). One of our friends tweaked his knee on his bike so Jeff rode Tom's YZ, and at some point Geri's KX, before getting back on his TRX 450R.

Here's a description from the Caribou-Targhee page of what you'll find-

Falls Campground is located next to the Snake River in beautiful Swan Valley at an elevation of 5,100 feet.
Idaho Falls, Idaho is just 45 miles west. Visitors enjoy fishing and canoeing on the Snake and viewing local wildlife.
Natural Features:  The campground is situated alongside the Snake River among cottonwood trees, which provide partial shade. Grassy meadows and summer wildflowers dot the landscape. Wildlife is plentiful in the river bottom. Eagles, osprey, moose and deer are frequently spotted.
Fall Creek Falls is less than 1/4 mile from the campground. This scenic cascade drops 60 feet over a travertine outcropping on the river's edge. It is visible from some parts of the campground.
Recreation:  The Snake River offers excellent cutthroat trout fishing, canoeing, floating, rafting and kayaking. Conant Boat Ramp is nearby and open to the public.
Facilities: The campground offers one group site that can accommodate up to 150 people. Several single sites are also available, all with picnic tables, campfire rings and grills.
Vault toilets, drinking water and trash collection are provided, but there is no electricity. Firewood is available for purchase from the host. Roads and parking spurs are gravel.
Nearby Attractions: Palisades Reservoir is less than 20 miles from Falls Campground, with great boating, water skiing, canoeing, fishing and swimming. The Fall Creek area has many trails for hiking, mountain biking, horseback and ATV riding.
LAKE CHANNEL SAND DUNES - AMERICAN FALLS , ID -
A great place for a day of fun! Dune area to ride in, sand trails to explore and dirt trails up on the ridge for more fun. Only tricky part was getting our DRR 50 out of the dunes because you have to go up a pretty good hill climb to get back up on top where the staging area is. Always pack a tie-down with you. No restrooms, but lots of areas to explore.
From Interstate 15 (North or South), head west on I-86 and follow west to American Falls (approx 25+ miles). Take Exit 40 and at the off-ramp stay to the right (north side of the freeway) and follow Highway 39 as it curves around the perimeter of American Falls. As soon as you go over the dam, as the highway is curving right, take an immediate left onto Lamb Weston Road. Lamb Weston will take you south and into a 90 degree right hand curve. As soon as you come off the curve, turn left onto Borah Road. Borah Road heads south and then curves right/west and you'll take the first left onto Lake Channel Road. Lake Channel Road will have some turns in it as you go around farm fields, but it will come to a T at Quigley Road. Take a right on Quigley Road and follow Quigley around the left hand curve up to the staging area on your left. Have fun!

HIGH PLAINS MOTO CLUB / MX TRACK - REXBURG, ID

Directly behind Rexburg Motor Sports on Hwy 20. Take exit 332, go west and turn right at the stop sign right at Rexburg Motor Sports. Track entrance is behind RMS. Definitely a bike track but quads are allowed. Lots of doubles that lead you right into a 180 turn. Some good tables that allow you to air it out without the fear of coming up short, like the doubles. It's a narrow track, but fun none the less. The main track is $15 per rider and the PeeWee track is $5. The PeeWee track is long enough to entertain most any young rider. Tables, single jumps, soft woops, and wide enough for a quad but otherwise it's a single-track. You sign in and pay at the house right behind RMS.

SACAJAWEA MOTORSPORTS PARK - SALMON, ID - SOUTH CENTRAL REGION
Sacajawea Motorsports Park in Salmon is a very fun place to ride!! It has so many similarities to our favorite tracks we used to ride in Arizona, Speedworld and Grinding Stone. There's a fun kids track in the infield of the main track that we rode with our daughter for a bit to make sure she had the hang of it. The main track is amazing! It can be altered to be extremely long like Glen Helen, or there's an area to cut it a little short to avoid the roller coaster hill climbs and descents if you're a newer rider. The track is not groomed that we know of, but is in incredibly great shape. Sacajawea Motorsports Park is a primitive location right on the edge of the town of Salmon. Easy access from town but with our camper we have to park up on top of the hill and ride a good distance down to the track.
