BRM OFFROAD - AZOP QUAD RACING
We had a lot of fun racing with AZOP / Grinding Stone when we were in Arizona and hope to race with them again. They typically have a good quad and bike turnout and the Side-by-Side class is really booming. If you are in or around the Arizona area and would like to find some quad racing (atv racing), be sure to check out AZOP.
AZOP / GRINDING STONE - 2010
ROUND 1 - JANUARY 3, 2010
Round 1 out at Speedworld MX in Surprise, Arizona went well considering the low turn out. It's tough for any race organization to compete with celebrating New Years at the dunes, but we had fun with all our friends and familiar faces we saw out at the track.
Jeff Barrett is running in the 40+ B class on his 2006 Honda TRX450R and due to a late race mishap to Marsha Garcia, took 1st on the day. Missy Barrett is running in the 30+A class, also on a 2006 Honda TRX450R, and had a fun battle with Les Hutchison late in the race after a pit stop to try and secure her rotating throttle housing. Missy and Les put on a great show for the fans the last lap with Les coming out in front and Missy settling for a 4th place finish in her class. Noelani Barrett (NoMo) is running is the 4-6 year, 50-90cc class on her 2009 DRR DRX 50. She had the time of her life racing on the vintage/intermediate track and finished in 2nd place in a time of 42:59.

Round 7 of the AZGP series was held out at Speedworld MX in Surprise, Arizona. It went well considering the low turn out, it's too bad more local racers don't attend these events. AZGP is extremely affordable in comparison to the other local options and the tracks are always a lot of fun.
Jeff Barrett raced in the 40+ B class on his 2006 Honda TRX450R and battled with a dry and dusty field, having fun being back on the track. Jeff also raced his 2010 Polaris RZRS for the 1st time and did amazing. He battled for a couple laps with the class leader and finally passing for 1st place. Their race was pretty long and finished in the dark. Lots of fun out there. Missy Barrett is still on the IR and won't be racing until the final 2 rounds in December. Noelani Barrett raced in the 4-6 year, 50cc class on her 2009 DRR DRX 50 and was the only rider in her class. AZGP gave her the main mx track for 35 minutes and she had a blast racing "the big track".

AZOP / GRINDING STONE - 2009
Round 1, January 25, 2009, came the day after WORCS round 1 out at Speedworld which may have contributed to the low turn-out. We were a little sore from our WORCS race, but ready for more fun and ended up with much better results :)
Round 1 showed a light turnout, with a local motocross race the day before and a regional series in town. It was the first time quad racers had 3 entirely different options in the same weekend. After both competing in the regional series the day before, we were both as ready as could be for another 50 minute grand prix race.
The first race of the morning started with the Women's classes all starting together. Missy Barrett was the only 'A' rider, Marsha Garcia ran 'B', and Lisa Johnson and Darby Martin both competed in 'C'. At the start, Marsha jumped out to a great start followed by Lisa & Missy. Darby had a little trouble on the line, but quickly caught up. There was a great battle with Marsha and Missy swapping positions throughout the first 4 laps. Missy finally got her last pass to stick around lap 4 while Lisa and Darby were having just as exciting of a battle, with Lisa coming across the line 1st, 3rd overall.
The next group of racers included Jeff and the rest of the 40+ group. Jeff was on the line with Jack Gravel in the 'A' class, Ken George and Jeffrey Mitchell in the 'B' class, and Aileen Baca in the 'D' class. They all had a competitive start with Jack grabbing the holeshot. Jack was clearly out in first but a great battle with Ken and both Jeff's wasn't far behind. About half way thru the race Jeff Barrett made the pass on Jeffrey Mitchell for 3rd overall.

ROUND 2 - APRIL 5, 2009
Round 2 had a much better turnout than round 1 with a 50% increase. Unfortunately there were still only 4 women rounding out the 2 classes represented in the Womens A, B, C, & D classes. The other groups were considerably larger and made for some exciting bar-to-bar action all throughout the day.
The first 50 minute race of the morning started with the Women's classes all starting together. Missy Barrett was the only 'A' rider, while Darby Martin, Lisa Johnson, and Monica Razo competed in 'C'. At the start, Darby jumped out to a great start followed by Lisa, Monica, and myself. Lisa and I held a very tight battle thru the first few corners and jumps but as we hit the end of the big straight and set up for the right-hander going into the wash I ran into some trouble. I was right behind Lisa in the corner, but just as I hit the gas upon exit, my 450R simply died. I didn't know what was wrong. I didn't hit the off switch (which has happened on more than one occasion), the fuel pecock was in the 'on' position, everything seemed normal other than I was just sitting there. Monica quickly went by as did every other racer in the next 2 groups to start (approximately 10-12 others). I finally got my quad re-started and had to do what I could to catch up with the other gals.
I was found myself stuck behind 2 other racers in a small pile-up just as we were coming around the corner to exit the first wash section. About 20-30 seconds went by as the other 2 riders freed themselves and got going again. With some tight single track sections ahead, I wasn't really able to make up any ground. Before lap 1 ended, I made my way past the initial 2 riders from the other group and was scanning what I could of the track and terrain looking for Darby, Lisa, and Monica.
At the start of lap 2, I was going thru the left-hand sweeper before the long straight away and I could see Darby and Lisa across the way, coming out of the wash. They were over a minute ahead of me and battling each other hard. I felt like I was doing pretty good, but got hung up for a few more seconds behind another racer that got stuck in the silt between the 2 canyon walls just off the motocross section. So once again I was had to wait for a clear path to open up.
Lap 3 was very similar to lap 2. Once again when I was heading down the main straight I could see Darby and Lisa exiting the wash. I made my way thru traffic a little quicker on this lap and near the end of the motocross section, I had managed to close the gap on Monica, who was in her 1st-ever race and doing really well. I was finally able to make the pass on Monica just as we were coming out of the left hand corner before the arena. Monica drifted a little wide and I took the inside for the pass. Together we made a mad dash behind the arena section towards the next wash. I could see Lisa and Darby up ahead in a very tight battle of their own and I was relieved to see their dust clouds were getting closer, even though I was still pretty far behind.
Lap 4 things got exciting. I had consistently been about a minute behind Darby and Lisa, trying to make my way thru the field. Just before entering the first wash on lap 4, I could see others signaling where the leaders were (thanks Marsha!)... I was actually closing the gap. Coming into the motocross section I could see Darby and Lisa just a few corners ahead of me. But since the track has a lot of switch-backs, there was still quite a bit of real estate between us. As I was exiting the arena section, I could see Monica up ahead. Unfortunately for Monica she was struggling with the track a little. She was high-centered between the tractor tires at the merge before the next motocross section. I wanted to help, but at the same time I knew I was gaining some ground and wasn't sure how many laps were left. At the end of lap 4 I was only 15 seconds behind them.
As Darby and Lisa made their way across the top ridge, I wasn't too far behind, far enough where I couldn't quite see them, but from the reaction of the spectators along the track I knew they were close. Then, as Darby and Lisa were entering the 3rd wash, I was just exiting the backside of the arena. I could physically see them and not just their dust clouds in my line of sight. As I went down the wash, I was just in the tail end of the dust they left behind. It was a mad dash thru the arena and back onto the track. Coming thru the last few turns, I was just 1 table top behind them. I was sooo happy to be finishing with them and not how it looked at the start. At the end it was Darby taking 1st over all, Lisa just 3 seconds behind for 2nd place, and I was 5 seconds behind Lisa for 3rd. Even though my first lap was brutal, I had a great time trying to catch up, and I love the workout.
The next group of racers included Jeff Barrett and the rest of the 40+ group. With all the racers lined up behind their quads, waiting for the green flag, some were struggling with the length of their kill switch tether. The flag waved and Jeff got a decent start. He was about 4th off the line and made a couple of quick passes putting him in 2nd right behind the leader.
As Jeff and the leader were heading over the hill into the off-camber silt bed, they were both going in a little too hot. The leader blew the corner and ended up in the dry ditch. Jeff came over the hill and tried to make the corner and ended up sliding off the track right into the leader. The leader must have had a pretty exciting spill because he was facing the wrong direction when Jeff slid into him. Jeff helped the other guy get his quad out, who then took off without helping Jeff out. As Jeff lifted his quad out of the thick silt and ditch the entire field went by.
From that point on, other than swapping a few positions, his race was pretty uneventful. Jeff was closing the gap late in the race and finished just off the podium in 4th.
Jeffrey Johnson and Dawson Turner put on a great battle in their race. The 2 of them were bar-to-bar battling each other for the lead when Dawson's new Cobra ceased. Jeffrey walked away with his first victory and Dawson felt the disappointment of his quad letting him down.
Jonathan McVay had a rough start in the Pro class. Something about not being to kick his 450R at the start. He gave the others quite the advantage, but had fun reeling them in and moving up the ranks. He made a pass just as he was exiting the arena and moving his way up thru the field. He made another sweet pass right in front of his pit area at the end of the long straight just as he entered the 1st wash. Jonathan found himself in 3rd at the end of the day but it was a great day of racing for everyone.
Round 2 had a much better turnout than round 1 with a 50% increase. Unfortunately there were still only 4 women rounding out the 2 classes represented in the Womens A, B, C, & D classes. The other groups were considerably larger and made for some exciting bar-to-bar action all throughout the day.

ROUND 3 - MAY 24, 2009
Round 3 had a great turnout with over 100 entries on Sunday. Unfortunately there still aren't many women coming out, so BRM Team Riders Missy Barrett ran in the 30+ 'A' class instead. The other groups were considerably larger and made for some exciting bar-to-bar action all throughout the day. Jeff Barrett was running in the 40+ 'B' class and we were excited to check out our new GoPro Helmet camera.
Race 3 was the first Quad race to run after the Unclassified and Trophy Karts, and BRM Team Rider Dawson Turner lead the way thru lap one on his Apex in the 90cc class. He had the lead on Dakota McNeal and they kept a tight battle thru much of the race until Dawson ran into motor problems, and finished 3rd. Tone Razo was also struggling back in 3rd on his DRR but was able to make a late pass to clinch 2nd. With Dawson stalling several times, Dakota was able to walk away with a first place victory.
Jeff Barrett and the other 40+ B racers were the third group off the line, of race 4, and they all went hard into the right hand 1st turn the lead them onto the mx portion of the track. After the MX section the racers were funneled into some tight and technical single-track that lead them across the property and over to the arena on the south end. After crossing thru the arena, it was into the first wash section then back up across the trophy kart track, thru a portion of the pee-wee track, and into the scoring area before heading out to the long desert section on the north end of the facility. The track was probably about 7 miles in length (maybe longer), had some great technical terrain without any gimmicks throw in like tractor tires, boulders, or logs. It made for some great racing that was a true test of physical endurance and not what was going to blow your quad up.
Jeff was in a great battle much of the race with Ken George as the 2 of them kept the action nice and tight. They had a few lead changes and in the end it was Jeff taking the checkers just a few seconds ahead of Ken.
Race 6 was started shortly after noon and the temps were only in the mid 90's, a nice surprise for late May in Arizona. Missy Barrett was lined up in row one with the 30+ 'A' class. With their left hands in the air, the green flag was waved. Missy got a slow start, but made up ground quickly and passed for the lead before the the end of the mx section. To her surprise she was leading the pack of a pretty fast field... for the rest of lap 1. Going into lap 2, three racers from the 30+ 'B' class got by her but she passed one of them back on the mx section and was right behind the other 2 for the remainder of lap 2.
Unfortunately for Missy Barrett, she started getting fatigued half way thru lap 3 (of 5). Her thumb was just not cooperating with holding the throttle open while pushing thru the long, rugged terrain. About midway thru lap 4, she could feel the blisters developing, but didn't think much of them, just kept trying to 'will' her thumb to step up to the challenge. She would get burst her and there, but not enough to keep a good steady pace. She finished 2nd in class and 8th overall.
Race 7 featured BRM Team Rider Jonathan McVay who had a good run in the Pro class. The warm temps were taking a toll on all the riders, but there was exciting racing the full hour and a half they were out there. Jonathan found himself in 5th at the end of the day, but it was still a great day of racing for everyone.

ROUND 5 - NOVEMBER 8, 2009
Round 5 was awesome! We had a pretty good run in our classes, but the most memorable part of the day was watching our 4 year old daughter take the green for her first time. Noelani ran in the 4-6 yr, 50cc, beginner class on her BRM OFFROAD DRR DRX50 and did better than we ever could have expected. She got high-centered every lap while going thru the scoring station, but that was to be expected with her small rear tires. What was the most surprising was how well she followed the course, ran for the full 30 minutes, and after she got the checkers she asked dad "Can I go again?" It was a great day for Team BRM OFFROAD and we are looking forward to round 6 in December.

ROUND 6 - DECEMBER 20, 2009
Round 6 was a lot of fun! So many great friends out there and the racing is just a blast! For team BRM OFFROAD we personally had a great day of racing and finished with a great season! Jeff Barrett started race 2 in the 40+ B class and battled it out with Ken George and Jeff Mitchell. The course was a new layout and the longest yet, it was great! Jeff B. killed it in one of the washes early on and had a ways to go to reel in Jeff M. and Ken but to no avail. In the end it was Jeff B. taking 3rd place and 3rd place on the season. Jeff completed 4 laps in 48 minutes, disappointed with his late lap fatigue.
Missy Barrett ran in race 4, the 30+ A class. Thinking she was the only 'A' out there for the day, she started with the 30+ B class. It turns out two late arrivals at the line were from the 'A' class. They got about a 30 second head start on Missy, but she was reeling them in by lap 4 but didn't have enough time to catch them. She finished 3rd on the day but also moved up from 5th to 3rd place on the season along with 1st place in Women's 'A'. Her battles out there were with Norm Graham on his LTR and unfortunately for Conrad Funke, his KTM had some late lap troubles. Missy completed 5 laps in 53 minutes and felt pretty good out there, excited for the new series in January.
Noelani Barrett was in race 6, the 4-6yr 50cc Stock class. This was her 2nd race ever and she did remarkably well with the technical challenges she faced. One of the downhills was actually really steep, but she did a great job controlling her quad and keeping herself under control. She also brought home hardware, but hers was the top box of the podium.
